Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers about expert witness work in asylum and immigration practice: when to retain an expert, what reports cover, and how testimony works.
What does an immigration and asylum expert witness do?
An expert witness provides specialized knowledge that helps an immigration judge, asylum officer, or appellate body understand facts outside ordinary experience. That can include country conditions, cultural context, medical or psychological findings, or other technical issues tied to the claim. The expert may submit a written report, appear at a hearing, or both.
When should counsel retain an expert witness?
Retain an expert when the case turns on specialized facts: persecution risk in a particular country, cultural practices that explain testimony, medical evidence of trauma, or gaps in the record that need independent analysis. Early involvement usually produces a clearer report and better hearing preparation.
Do you provide written reports, live testimony, or both?
Both. Many matters start with a written report or opinion letter. Where the court permits and counsel requests it, we also provide live testimony in person or by video. Scope is agreed with instructing counsel before work begins.
Who can request an expert?
Most requests come from immigration attorneys, nonprofit legal aid organizations, and advocacy groups. Applicants usually arrange expert support through counsel. If you are unsure whether an expert is needed, contact us with a brief outline of the issues.
Can experts appear at remote or hybrid hearings?
Yes, where the court or agency allows remote testimony. We prepare for Zoom, Teams, Webex, and similar platforms, and we confirm technical requirements with counsel ahead of the hearing.
What is a country conditions report?
A country conditions report is an expert written opinion on political, social, or security conditions in a country of origin, framed for asylum and immigration adjudication. It should be sourced, scoped to the claim, and useful to counsel and the adjudicator.
How quickly can a report be prepared?
Timing depends on the complexity of the issues, the materials available, and hearing deadlines. Tell us the hearing date and the questions you need answered so we can confirm whether the timeline is workable before we begin.
Where do you work?
We support immigration and asylum matters worldwide, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada, Australia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and other jurisdictions. Contact us with the venue and proceeding type.
Is my information shared with immigration authorities?
No. We do not report to or share inquiry or case information with immigration authorities unless required by a lawful court order. All requests and materials are handled in confidence.
What should I include when requesting an expert?
Send your name, email, a short description of the case issues, the hearing or filing date if known, and the type of expertise needed. Counsel can follow up with the file once we confirm availability and scope.
